We Cover Foster Kids!

The Healthy Kids & Young Adults program now covers former foster care youth from age 21 (when they age-out of Medi-Cal), through age 24.  The program provides complete medical, dental, and vision insurance at a nominal cost.  Additionally, these youth are exempt from the eligibility requirement of having had to have transitioned from another government-sponsored health insurance program, so they may join at any time.

The decision to cover young people aging out of foster care originated from a meeting with San Francisco Supervisor Sophie Maxwell and a group of former foster youth advocating for health insurance. Supervisor Maxwell facilitated a meeting between the group and Mayor Newsom, who acted immediately by working with San Francisco Health Plan to extend the benefits.

“Extending the Healthy Kids and Young Adults program to the foster youth in our city was an effective and natural solution to provide affordable, reliable insurance so these young people can step into society with the best possible chance to live a healthy, productive life,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “I am proud that we have a program like Healthy Kids & Young Adults to extend to these young people.”
