Are You at Risk for Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that causes high blood sugar which can raise your risk of heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and other serious health problems.

You may be at risk for type 2 diabetes if you:

  • Are 45 years of age or older
  • Are overweight
  • Have family members with type 2 diabetes
  • Are physically active less than 3 times per week
  • Ever had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes) or gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

If you’re at risk for type 2 diabetes, you can make small changes to lower your risk and help you live a happier, healthier life. Two things you can do to lower the risk of getting diabetes are:

  • Losing 5% to 7% of your body weight, just 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person.
  • Getting at least 150 minutes a week of brisk walking or similar activity. That’s just 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

With the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) from SFHP and the YMCA

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a lifestyle change program for adults aged 18 or older who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes. You’ll learn ways to eat healthy, move more, and lose a small amount of weight to lower diabetes risk.

 How the Program Works

  • You’ll join a small, supportive group led by a trained lifestyle coach
  • Attend 25 one-hour sessions over one year
  • You do not need to be a YMCA member to join
Change is tough—we can help.
