Protect Yourself from the Flu

Unlike COVID-19, there is a vaccine that can prevent influenza (flu). All people 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine each year.

The flu vaccine isn’t perfect, but it will lower the chance that you or your loved ones will get very sick from influenza. It can reduce days of missed work and school, and prevent having to stay in the hospital. Flu can be very serious, especially for young children and people with serious health problems like lung disease or diabetes.COVID-19 is a year round pandemic. Influenza is a seasonal pandemic, killing tens of thousands in the US each year.You can protect yourself and others from the flu by getting the flu vaccine (a shot or nasal spray) each fall.

These actions can protect you from the flu and other common sicknesses:

  • Wash hands often
  • Avoid touching your face with your hands
  • Cover sneezes and cough with your upper arms
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home from work or school if you are sick.

Medi-Cal members 19 years old and older can get the flu shot at their doctor’s office or the pharmacy. Children 18 years or younger can get the flu shot at their doctor’s office.
