Update your child’s vaccinations before school starts
It’s important that your child gets all their vaccines to keep them and your family healthy through the school year. If your child is heading back to school and missed a vaccine, you don’t have to start over.
Call your primary care provider* (PCP) right away to schedule a “catch-up” visit or to ask questions.
You can find your PCP’s number on your SFHP ID card or call Customer Service at 1(415)547-7800.
Vaccines help to lower your child’s risk for serious diseases like:
- Chickenpox (VAR) prevents blisters, skin infections, nerve damage, and loss of eyesight.
- COVID-19 Booster prevents Coronavirus disease.
- Hemophilic Influenza type B (Hib) prevents meningitis (brain infection), pneumonia (lung infection), and blood infection.
- Hepatitis A (HepA) prevents fever, tiredness, and diarrhea (loose, watery stool.)
- Hepatitis B (HepB) prevents HepB virus-related liver disease and cancer.
- Measles (MMR) prevents pneumonia (lung infection), deafness, and brain damage.
- Polio (IPV) prevents muscle paralysis and disabilities.
Vaccines for your child are recommended by the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The ACIP is made up of medical and public health experts. All vaccines recommended by ACIP are covered by SFHP Medi-Cal.
Visit the CDC to check the vaccine schedule for infants and children. Ask your PCP for the vaccine schedule for your child.
*Your primary care provider (PCP) is the doctor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner in charge of your health care.
