Understanding and Preventing Migraines

What are migraines?

Migraines are headaches that can last hours to days. They can cause nausea and vomiting. They can make you sensitive to light and sound. Sometimes migraine attacks come with other issues like flashes of light, other vision changes, or tingling in your hand or face. When migraines are very strong, it can be hard to do the things you usually do.

Treating and preventing migraines

Some treatments focus on easing symptoms during a migraine and some focus on prevention. Over time, repeated use of some medicines for easing symptoms can lead to more migraines.

If you have frequent or severe migraines, you may need to take medicines to prevent more attacks.

Prevention can lead to

  • Fewer migraines
  • Less severe migraines
  • Shorter migraines
