3 Ways to Help Your Child Thrive
You can help set your child up for a healthy future. Make sure they get the care they need early in life with:
Well-child visits
During a well-child visit, your child’s primary care provider (PCP)* will check your child’s growth, development, and answer your questions. They’ll also give your child any vaccines (shots) or screenings they need.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
Babies have at least 6 well-child visits before they turn 15 months old.
Toddlers have 2 well-child visits between 16 and 30 months.
Children, teens, and young adults up to age 21 have yearly well-child visits.
*A primary care provider (PCP) is the main doctor or health care provider who helps you stay healthy and handles your care.
Developmental screenings
Developmental screenings are recommended at 9, 18, and 30 months. These check if your child is reaching milestones (like smiling, waving goodbye, and laughing) by certain ages. Getting these screenings early will help you learn if your child needs more support.
Fluoride varnish
Protect your child’s teeth and gums by making sure they get a fluoride treatment every 3 to 6 months at their primary care or dental office. Fluoride varnish is a safe and quick way to help prevent cavities.
