What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is when very thin needles are inserted into parts of the skin to help healing. It can help lower long-lasting pain (chronic pain) and migraine headaches. It is done by trained providers called Acupuncturists. SFHP covers acupuncture to lower long-lasting pain, known as chronic pain, including migraine headache.
How long does it take to feel better?
Most people feel better within weeks after starting acupuncture. Acupuncture is usually done once or twice a week and sometimes less as patients start feeling better. The acupuncturist will talk to you about the plan to treat your pain and will change the plan if you do not feel better.
What will the acupuncturist do to treat my pain?
The acupuncturist will insert very thin needles into the skin. The needles are so thin that most people can barely feel them. Sometimes the needles are used with a device that gives very low electrical stimulation to larger muscles. The acupuncturist may also use other things like using ice, heat, and massage to lower your pain. Your acupuncturist might also talk with you about healthy eating and helpful ways to move your body.
