About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their life. For many people, the best way to check for breast cancer is with a mammogram. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast and can find tumors (a group of abnormal cells) that are too small for you or your provider to feel.
Getting a mammogram is safe. It can find breast cancer early, so you can get the treatment you need. With Medi-Cal, you can get breast cancer screenings at no cost.
The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends all women get screened every other year starting at age 40 to 74. Talk with your primary care provider* (PCP) or OB-GYN about your own risk factors.
A mammogram will take about 10 to 15 minutes. One at a time, your breast will be pressed against metal plates with just enough pressure to stay still while an X-ray picture is being taken. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable, but it only lasts a short time.
Finding and treating cancer early can save your life. If cancer is found, including complex cancer, medically necessary treatment is covered by Medi-Cal. Learn more in your Member Handbook.
