Poor oral health can lead to pain, trouble with school or work, and may even lead to significant health problems. Sometimes an oral disease may not cause any pain or signs that you can see until the disease is severe. Practicing basic dental care at home and getting routine dental check-ups can protect you and keep you healthy.
What Can I Do To Prevent Dental Problems?
- Brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once a day.
- Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.
- Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles.
- Use fluoride toothpaste.
- Follow your dentist’s directions on how to brush your teeth.
- Go to all your routine dental check-ups and cleanings.
- Choose healthy foods that are good for your teeth and gums, such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.
- Avoid foods and drinks that have a lot of sugar and try not to snack before bedtime.
- Avoid using tobacco products and talk to your primary care provider* (PCP) if you need help quitting.
Ask your dentist how often you should have a dental visit based on your own risk factors.
