Some members can get a $50 gift card for colon cancer test

What is colorectal (colon) cancer?

Colorectal cancer is when cells in your colon or rectum start to grow out of control. Sometimes it is called colon cancer. The colon is also known as the large intestine. The rectum is the end of the colon that connects to the anus. Colon cancer often starts as a polyp or a growth of cells. Most polyps are nothing to worry about, but some may lead to cancer if not checked by a doctor.

What are the risk factors?

Some things may put you at a higher risk for colon cancer, such as:

  • Your Age:
People aged 50+ are at a higher risk
  • Ethnicity:
Being Black/African American or of Eastern European descent
  • Diet:
Eating too many processed meats (like bacon and deli meats)
  • Family history:
Have you or your family had colon cancer in the past? Or other diseases like Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis?

Talk to your primary care provider (PCP) about getting checked for colon cancer. A PCP is your main doctor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. Getting early tests lets your PCP treat any polyps before they turn into cancer. Testing helps find these polyps early when treatment is most helpful.
