Follow your doctor’s instructions to take your medicine correctly
Taking your medicine when you are supposed to is a big part of being safe and healthy. When you take your medicine the way your provider tells you to, it works the best. It helps to manage your sickness or condition and keeps you safe. For example, taking your blood pressure medicine can protect you from future strokes and heart attacks.
You may not always feel changes in your body, but the medicine will work if you keep taking it the right way.
Tips to help you take your medicine:
Know your medicine. Learn why you need it, how it helps you, and what might happen if you don’t take it. Knowing can help you remember why taking your medicine is important.
Set reminders. Use alarms or apps on your phone to remind you when it’s time to take your medicine. You can also use a pillbox that has sections for each day of the week. This can help you remember if you have taken your medicine already or not.
Make it a habit. Try to take your medicine at the same time each day. You can do it with something you do every day, like brushing your teeth or before/after eating a meal. Ask your provider when the best time is to take each of your medications.
Talk to your primary care provider (PCP). If you have any questions or worries about your medicine, talk to your PCP or pharmacist. Your PCP is your main doctor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. They can help you to understand your medicine better and make sure it’s the right one for you.
Keep track. Write down what medicine you take, how much, and when you take it. Keep your medication list in your wallet, or purse, and bring it with you to your health visits.
Refill on time. Make sure you have enough medicine. Don’t wait until you run out. Get your medicine refilled before you run out, so you don’t miss any doses.
Stay informed. Ask your PCP about your medicine and any changes you might need. It’s important to know what’s going on with your medicine and your body.
