Need help to talk with and understand your primary care provider (PCP)?*

No matter what your immigration status is, you have the right to quality health care. This includes being able to talk with your provider clearly, ask questions, and understand your care. SFHP can help you get care in the language you speak, including American Sign Language.

Steps for Getting Care in Your Language

Get the most out of your next doctor’s visit with a few easy steps:

  1. Choose a PCP who speaks your language. SFHP providers speak many languages. Visit our Provider Directory to find a PCP who speaks your language.
  2. Ask for a Qualified Health Interpreter (interpreter). When you call your PCP to make an appointment, you can also ask for an interpreter at no cost to you. The interpreter will join you for your health visit, either in person or over the phone. Learn more about interpreter services.
    • You can find the phone number of your PCP on the back of your Member ID Card. If you need help finding their number, call SFHP Customer Service.
  3. Get materials in your language at no cost. You can get SFHP and member information in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Russian.

Your Rights as an SFHP Member

We know this is a stressful and confusing time for many people in our community. It’s important to know that all SFHP members have rights, including undocumented residents:

  1. You have the right to health care. All California residents can get Medi-Cal no matter what country they come from or their immigration status. If you are worried about going to in-person health visits, you can also get care over the phone or through video.
  2. You have the right to get an interpreter at no cost. You can get quality care in the language of your choice.
  3. You have the right to get urgent health care, including hospital care. You will not be turned away from the hospital because of your immigration status.

*Your PCP is the main doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or clinic in charge of your health care.
