Medi-Cal Health Services for Children Ages 1-6

Preventive health visits help to make sure your child has their needed vaccines, and that they are growing and developing as expected. These services are available through Medi-Cal at no cost to you.

Your child’s doctor can help.

If your child might be due for a health visit, we urge you to call your child’s Primary Care Physician (PCP). The PCP is the doctor, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant who is in charge of your child’s healthcare.

These visits may involve things like checking your child’s height and weight. Your PCP might also test for problems with eyesight, hearing, mental health, or eating habits. You will also have a chance to ask any questions you have about your child’s behavior or development.

The Primary Care Physician can tell you if your child needs vaccines to prevent serious sickness. Vaccines also help protect the health of our community, especially people who cannot get vaccines.

These visits may also involve checking for lead poisoning and other problems. Children age 6 and under may need a test for lead in the blood, especially at 12 and 24 months. Checking for higher levels of lead could help to find sources of lead. This could also help protect others in the community.

Suggested Vaccines for Children Under 7 Include:

• Influenza (flu)
• Hepatitis B
• Haemophilus influenzae type B
• Pneumococcal vaccine
• Measles, mumps, & rubella (MMR)
• Hepatitis A
• Diptheria, tetanus, & acellular pertussis (DTaP)
• Pneumococcal conjugate
• Inactivated poliovirus (polio)
• Varicella

Your PCP can tell you if you could have the visit over the phone or if your child should come in for a visit.
